Readings

Into a New World of Librarianship-Michael Stephens

Stephens lists traits that are associated with librarians working with advanced technology, Web 2.0. It is important that a Librarian 2.0 thinks of her patrons needs regarding any questions involving technology; that includes having services, such as chat sessions and blogs, available to "connect" to a librarian. 2.0 librarians need to be quick on their toes (or fingers) to learn and teach  about emerging technologies. Also, they need to educate themselves by reading not only about their field, but other issues that are current. I agree with Stephens that "the Library is human." Based on this short blog, a 2.0 librarian sounds up my alley.

To a Temporary Place in Time-Dr. Wendy Schultz

Schultz describes the transitional process of web technologies that libraries will face in the future. Schultz believes that libraries will expand into web 4.0. I am just learning about 2.0, and already there are maps for 3.0 and 4.0! Yet, Schultz states, with humor, that web 4.0 will incorporate relaxation. Technology (and life) can be overwhelming; therefore, it is nice to depart for awhile with a good read. I am torn between the ever-changing technology and having book discussions with friends, like Hemingway did (in "A Moveable Feast).

To Better Bibliographic Services-John J. Riemer

With the aid of Web 2.0, librarians can better serve their patrons with more organized, and therefore efficient catalogs. Expanding metadata will result in more information that can be stored. This is an asset to any library.
